Way Up on the Roof

Temporary Repairs For A Leaking Roof

One of the common issues with roofs is leaks. While the permanent solution to constant leaks is a new roof installation, this may not be the appropriate remedy if you have insufficient funds. Several roof repairs can help address leaks on your roof before you can afford to install a new roof.

Waterproof Tarps

One temporary fix for a leaking roof is waterproof tarps. The tarps are placed over the holes. The tricky part is ensuring the tarp covers the entire source of the leak. Also, you need to ensure the tarp is flat against the roof and there are no gaps where water can slide through. Use duct tape or nail down the edges to secure your roof against a storm. While placing waterproof tarps is a DIY task, consult a roof repair contractor if you are unsure about how to place them and want to avoid further damage.

Roof Cement, Silicone, and Sealant

Another temporary repair for a leaking roof is cement, silicone, or rubber sealant. Roof cement is most suited for dry conditions. If the leaks are caused by small holes, your roofing contractor may opt for silicone. Rubber sealant is the best material when you have to make repairs during the wet season.

Reattaching and Substituting Shingles

If a roof leak is caused by a few loose shingles, you only need to reattach the shingles. This involves shifting the shingles into place and stapling them to cover the damaged area. Reattaching the shingles is a temporary solution while you gather the funds to call a roof repair technician.

If there are a few broken or missing shingles, you can place a set of temporary shingles. If you don't have extra shingles, you can cut out sheet metal and attach it to the roof. Cover the nails with cement to prevent the leak. Don't wait long before calling a roofing professional to address the leak permanently.

Patching and Plugging

Another temporary solution to a roof leak is patching. Apply roofing tape to the leak. You should use this method only in dry conditions. However, if it's raining, the tape's adhesive properties will wear away quickly.

Plugging involves pouring water and powder into your roof leak. This mixture will dry and prevent water from getting in. However, this remedy will not work for long, and you might have to repeat it severally before a professional roofer seals the leak permanently.

In Closing

The temporary solution to a minor roof leak depends on the size of the hole or crack in the roof, among other things. Some temporary repairs are DIY procedures, while others require professional skills. However, you must prepare for a long-term solution like re-roofing or a complete roof replacement.
