Eco-Friendly Roofing Materials for Your Roof Installation

Now more than ever, it's important to think about the impact we make on the environment. Choosing an eco-friendly roofing material for your home is one simple way you can reduce your carbon footprint and make a big difference. But how do you know what to choose? Here are a few of the most eco-friendly roofing materials available today. Your local residential roofer can give you advice on how effective one of these products will be on your home and in your climate.

Solar Roofing

Imagine reducing your energy bills while increasing your access to clean energy all at the same time. With a solar roof, you can. A solar roof is composed of photovoltaic shingles that look similar to conventional tile roofing but act as solar panels. A solar roof gives you access to clean and sustainable solar power that can supplement the power you use from your local municipality. Solar roofing tiles are also very energy efficient and some are three times as strong as traditional roofing tiles. However, expect to pay a premium.

Recycled Shingles

Another great eco-friendly option that's much more affordable than solar is recycled shingles. Although the most popular roofing shingles — asphalt shingles — are cheap and long-lasting, they have a harmful impact on the environment because they're often sent straight to a landfill after use. A great alternative is a shingle made of recycled material like plastic and rubber from discarded tires. Not only are these shingles made from recyclable material, but they are also 100% recyclable too.

Clay and Slate Tiles

Another fantastic option for an eco-friendly roof is tile made from clay or slate. Clay and slate tiles are extremely energy efficient, reflecting the sun's harsh rays in the summer and absorbing radiant heat in the winter. They're also incredibly long-lasting. Clay tile can last up to 100 years, and slate tile can last as long or longer. Slate is a natural quarried material and clay tile is manufactured with low environmental impact. Although more costly than asphalt shingles, the tile's increased longevity usually makes the initial cost worth it.

Standing-Seam Metal Roofing

Another great option for an eco-friendly roof is standing seam metal roofing. This concealed fastener roofing system is fire-resistant and available in options made from recycled materials. When installed with light colors that reflect sunlight, it's also incredibly energy efficient because it reflects direct heat in the summer and absorbs radiant heat in the winter. It has great longevity too, which means you won't be creating unnecessary waste any time soon.
