Way Up on the Roof

Roofing Damage And Repair Information

For many homeowners, the thought of having to repair major damage to their house can be extremely stressful. The roof can be an area of the home that homeowners may be especially worried about, but they may also lack the information that would allow them to effectively protect the home and repair any roof damage that is able to occur.

Avoid Assuming That Roofing Damage Will Be Easily Seen

Many of the problems and damages that a home can suffer will be extremely noticeable. While there are some types of roofing problems that will be easily seen, there are many others that will be far more difficult for a person to notice on their own. Rather, a comprehensive roof inspection will be needed to find some of these more subtle damages.

Check The Attic After Strong Storms

Strong storms are often the primary threat for causing significant damage to the roof. Unfortunately, homeowners will often take no steps in assessing whether their roof has suffered damage following one of these events. At a minimum, the roof ceiling in the attic should at least be inspected for signs of leaks. In addition to leaks that are actively dripping water into the home, you should also look for water stains or other indications that leaks may have been occurring previously. This will not be the most comprehensive damage assessment for the roof, but it can help you catch some of the more serious problems that may actively be leaking large amounts of water into the house.

Understand The Threats From Winter Weather

Winter weather can be another source of damage for a roof. The snow and ice that can gather on the roof during the winter months can weigh enough to put tremendous stress on the roof itself. As a result, the roof can be at a much greater risk of collapse, cracking, or even splitting. All of these issues can represent a major problem for the home as they can allow moisture to ensure or increase the risk of structural collapse. Preventing these damages will require you to limit the amount of snow and ice that gathers on the roof. While you may assume that removing snow and ice from the roof will be extremely hard, there are ice melting systems that can be installed on roofs. Homeowners in areas with extremely cold winters may consider this upgrade to be almost necessary for preventing roof damage from large amounts of winter precipitation.
