Way Up on the Roof

You Don't Need to Know a Thing about Home Repairs to Follow These Roof Care Tips

If you're not someone who considers yourself handy, then you might cringe when you come across most roof care tips. The idea of replacing some shingles or putting a gutter on may be way too much. Not everyone can be a roofer, so if you're not comfortable doing these things, you can hire the pros. However, there are some roof care tips you can employ even if you're not handy at all.

1. Make sure there's enough insulation in your attic.

What does insulation have to do with roofing? A lot, actually. Attic insulation protects your roof from getting too hot, which helps the shingles last longer. Adding insulation to your attic is as easy as putting on a mask and some gloves, and then unrolling a big layer of fiberglass. You can tell whether or not your roof needs insulation by simply taking a look. If there is only one layer, you should add a second one. Unroll it perpendicular to the other layer. Make sure you use fiberglass insulation without backing.

2. Clear the leaves off.

Leaves that accumulate on the roof can cause a lot of trouble. They trap moisture against the roof, which can not only cause the shingles to break down but can also cause mold and moss to grow. As long as you don't mind climbing up a ladder, you can just use a long-handled broom to push them off the roof. A leaf blower might also work if you can manage to get up a ladder with one. Have a friend hold the ladder for safety and stability.

3. Clean your gutters.

Cleaning the gutters is sometimes framed as a big, demanding task, but it's not. Yes, you have to climb a ladder to reach the gutters. But once you're up there, all you have to do is put your hand in the gutter and pull out the stuff. You can wear a glove if you don't want to touch the gutter gunk. You might not want to tackle any high-up gutters yourself, but you should be able to clean any along a first floor and porch roofs. Clear gutters make sure your roof stays dry, which will help the roof last longer.

If you tackle the tasks above, you will be taking better care of your roof. Contact residential roofing services to learn more.
