Way Up on the Roof

Think You Need Roof Repair? Look For These Warning Signs

Does your home's roof feel like a bit of a mystery? You may not know if the roof is doing its job of protecting your home until it is too late. Thankfully, there are some ways that you can tell your roof should be repaired.

Mold In The Attic

One thing that you should do is take a look in the attic and see if you can find any damage. If you have a leak in your roof that allows water to get in, you will likely notice that there is some sort of mold growth in the space. There may be black mold on the rafter where the water is dripping onto the surface, or even mold that has formed in the insulation due to where it is collecting. If you have mold in your attic, it is definitely a reason to have your roof repaired because it is not providing the protection that you need.

Light Leaking In The Attic

If you cannot spot signs of mold, you may be able to see the telltale sign of a roof leak. Do you notice any places where light is leaking in from the outside? If so, this is a clear sign that the roof has a leak in it. You should never be able to see light pass through any part of your roof, which means there is a clear path to the outside where water can get through.

Shingle Curling

There are plenty of roof repair warning signs that you can spot from the outside of your home. Start by looking at the condition of your shingles. Do they lay flat against the roof, or do they look like they are slightly raised off the surface? If it's the latter, you could have a problem with curling shingles. This is when the edges of the shingles become damaged and actually start to curl upward. You may not think this is a problem right now, but it allows wind to get under the edge and lift the shingle off the roof. It can ruin the seal that the bottom of the asphalt shingles forms with the layer underneath, and cause shingles to be ripped off the roof.

Noticing any of these warning signs with your roof? It is possible that your roof needs to be repaired. Hire a roofing contractor to come to your home and perform a professional roof inspection to give you an overview of what needs to be repaired.
